The United States Military Installations database contains the boundaries, location, and areal information for important military installations in the United States and Puerto Rico. The database includes boundaries for 499 installations.

Purpose:
The data provide users with information about the locations, names, and sizes of military installations primarily for national planning applications.

The Military Installation Boundary files were compiled by the Military Traffic Management Command - Transportation Engineering Agency from a variety of sources including the US Bureau of the Census TIGER/Line files.

Attributes for the military installations database have been created using a Geographic Information System.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
All node-link and polygon topological relationships are created and verified using computer algorithms. Unique entity identifiers were similarly verified using ARC/INFO.

The data set includes information for 499 installations in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Process_Description:
Military installation boundaries were added from TIGER data and topologically integrated. The data set was checked for completeness and accuracy and was extracted and reformatted into ASCII data files. Then the data was converted to shapefile (ArcView) format using Avenue script downloaded from the BTS web site and compressed using winzip software.
